Rich "The Freak On Wheels" Knapp at the INBF Central US!
1) Why don’t you give us an idea of where you came from and how you got to be the man you are today?
I used to be able body and grew up on farms and did hard labor jobs. So hard work was never a issue with me. In the mid 80’s I was diagnosed with M.S. After doing my research on it I found a low saturated fat, higher protein diet and exercise helped fight the effects. After a little while my co-workers talked me into competing. I’m 100% Natural so I did a INBF show in 1999 and took 3rd place novice. I was hooked. I went on to compete threw 2004 in the INBF in the Light Weight class and placed in the top three 9 more times.
2000 Great Lakes Pro-Qualifier I took 3rd place in the Light Weight Open Class
2000 North East Championships 1st in open Light Weight Open Class
2000 Midwest Championships 1st Open Light Weight Open Class
2001 Great Lakes Pro-Qualifier 2nd Open Light Weight Open Class
2001 WI State Championships 2nd Open Light Weight Open Class
2002 Wisconsin State Championships 1st place Open Light Weight Class
2002 Great Lakes Pro-Qualifier 2nd place Open Class Light Weight Class
2003 Great Lakes Pro-Qualifier 3rd place Open Light Weight Class
2004 Great Lakes Pro-Qualifier 2nd place Open Light Weight Class
In 2004 my left arm got caught in a paper rewinder and I was pulled in up to my shoulder. This gave me nerve damage in my left arm. They also found a bone cist in my right arm under my Bicep. With all this the Doctor pulled me off lifting heavy weights.
In 2009 I was diagnose with Bone Degeneration, 2 bad disks, Arthritis and a pinched Sciatic nerve in my low back. My cognitive functions became bad. This all put me into disabled for working a job. I ran across some wheelchair bodybuilders on the web and decided with post-it notes and my computer programs I could still do bodybuilding. My wife Tammy helped and backed me on it.
I did my first show in the spring of 2010 and haven’t looked back since doing 2 more shows.
2010 INBF US Central Championships 1st Place Wheelchair Class
2010 INBF WI State Championships 1st Place Wheelchair Class
2010 NANBF Mr. Natural MN Physically Challenged 1st Place
2) What keeps you going, what keeps you motivated to push day in and day out?
For starters and most important is my health. Second is to be the best I can be for my loving wife and myself.

3) What are your personal thoughts and opinions on wheelchair bodybuilders and would you recommend the sport to others in your position?
I would love to see the younger people get involved. If not to compete, just for their general health. This is a sport that to many in chairs don’t think its possible to do. NOT true. Here there’s a will and drive, there’s a way. Follow your dreams and don’t listen the people that don’t support your dream.
The wheelchair class big shows are all in the non-tested shows. I am presently working on helping the class grow in the INBF/WNBF. I even formed a wheelchair bodybuilding team (TEAM WCBBG) with some very respectable natural competitors. Gene Bergeron, Adefo Cerame Jr. , Josh Dillaberry and myself. We even have worked to bring a 2011 INBF Natural Wheelchair Nationals at the Buckeye Classics in Ohio to becoming a fact. And a Pro class is in the works in the WNBF. So our work is paying off. The class is growing and making it to the main stream in the INBF/WNBF. This will open up more show choices for wheelchair competitors and future competitors. I truly feel this class can grow and improve.
4) What routine / dieting method has given you the best results and do you still use it?
I switch up my routines to what my body tells me what it needs. It does stay with a 3 on and 1 or 2 off rotation. I’m presently doing a Chest/Tri – Back/Bi – Shoulders split.
My nutrition for cutting is over seen by 3D Muscle Journey. These guys really know there show prep. This allows me to concentrate on other things.
I follow set proteins and fats with slow drops in carbs. There is a Re-Feed day (NOT a cheat day) once a week. I like hitting my goal early because then I can do small raises in carbs and continue to burn fat. When I start cutting my show weight is only a goal weight. I go by how I look in the mirror on if I need to go lighter and better conditioning. The worst thing you can do is set a stage weight and be happy with it if you reach it. The judges don’t stop a show for the competitors to step on a scale, do a Fat Pinch Test or measure your arms. To many amateurs do a pinch test and it comes up 4% (in reality they are around 8%) and they are happy and think they are ripped and will win. This is there first mistake to not placing well and remaining a amateur. You should always beat your last show’s package in one way or another and always strive to squeeze out the best package. It’s a sport about beating your last package that’s the only thing you can control. You can’t control what the other guy is doing.

6) What is your take on the length of training sessions?
Personally I work out two times a day. Each workout I like to keep them 90 minutes or less. Between the two workouts I like to hit 40 or more sets. Then some days 20 minutes Hand Bike HIIT Cardio. When I’m in show prep 3 days of cardio at the least. My first work out is Power, Max Effort or Rep Range then my night work out is a Saturation workout.

7) What is one exercise you will always do week in and week out no matter what, and why ?
I change up my workouts every time to hit every fiber but a constant is ab crunches. This is due to being in a wheelchair they don’t get worked as much as when I was a able body doing a lot of lifting and twisting, so I have to compensate but doing the crunches more often.
8 ) Where do you hope this sport takes you ?
I’m not so much concerned about were it will take me as I am on were the Wheelchair class goes. If I make Pro along the way cool. My goal (as is TEAM WCBBG) is to see the class grow, expand and even have a Pro Class and Pro shows hear in USA and possibly in the WNBF also. If these things happen my goals will be met. Then I will set new goals in the sport.
